Shit Girls Say
The content, taken on the surface, seem offensive with mildly misogynistic generalizations, and sure there are plenty of ignorant people who find humor principally in those aspects. But to me, it's funny because of how Grayson Sheppard chose to fully realize the character and how he reproduces a subtly wide range of mannerisms and expressions that reflect a consistency of personality. In quick succession, we see this character in a diversity of amusing settings and emotional states; the sketch couples finely detailed acting with rapid-fire editing. As such, it is more than "Shit Girls Say" - it's shit that this specific girl says. and it should have been named more appropriately. Graydon Sheppard inhabits the feminine gestures not in broad caricature but with a certain tender commitment (reminiscent of Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie) that compensates for the sketch's over-representation of a particular brand of silly, vapid, and high-strung woman (the stereotype exists, but is it really good for women to be generalized yet again?) Misogyny and homophobia is practically built into current American comedy. Compare the user response to two other viral sketches by the genuinely hilarious Harvard Sailing Team: "Boys Will Be Girls" with "Girls Will Be Boys." It's borderline disturbing how vicious and hateful the comments are towards the attractiveness of the cast-mates in the latter sketch (all of whom are brilliant) and towards the feminism of the sketch overall... Back to the point - It's unfortunate that this particular sketch kind of appeals to crude prejudices common among the youtube user demographic/internet community...but still, it's both a knee-slapper and hilarious in its subtle aspects too. Oh, and Juliette Lewis gives the sketch a certain badass credibility.
